Description

i'm honestly surprised no one has had this idea before me?? so here goes:

flicker is the skywing in the middle, since she was hatched she was an animus. an unfortunate dragonet born into an unfortunate society, where as a hatchling, most, if not all, animi are killed via being thrown off a cliff when they are too young to fly, and fend for themselves.

flicker was lucky, both also cursed. her parents- when they found out- moved out from their stately home near the palace, out far into the mountainous countryside.
but all good things come to an end, no matter how well you prepare for said end.

their parents eventually went back to the palace to see old friends and family, and brought flicker along- she was an older dragonet, but they were worried about leaving her on their own.
when they were all together, at the market, flicker was able to go off on her own for a bit- and she bought various trinkets, knickknacks, and the like, talking to as many dragons as she could with her ear-to-ear grin.

but, as the rush of dragons filled the market, a jewelry cart was knocked out of its place, the old wooden wheels creaking as it slipped out of its spot, and down the cobbled street slope.
a few dragons jerked back, it wasn't much of a dangerous sight.
yet, down the steep slope, was a small group of dragonets, barely even 3 years old, play fighting with each other.
the marketplace erupted into panic, dragons rushing around and bumping into each other, trying to catch the cart as it flew down the road.

flicker, with a heart to big, knew she needed to save them.
there were too many dragons to fly- too much of a cramped space.
she wasn't athletic- she couldn't catch up with it on foot.

but she knew what to do.

"cart! i demand you to stop!"

and it stopped, the wheels becoming as still as a stone, and all of the sparkling chains and jewelry swinging back and forth.
the mother of the dragonets, relieved, managed to scoop them up and out of the main road.

flicker let out a sigh, smiling gently to herself.

but, once again, the marketplace became a flurry of dragons, it was an animus.

there was an animus here.

flicker, with anxiety running through her body, threw out her wings and rushed out of the market in a streak of red.

she thought she was safe.

she thought her parents could keep her safe,

she thought as she was pulled by chains by a pair of massive, royal guards, their scales, spears and armor glinting orange in the sunset.

what a beautiful place to be.

what an awful place to die.

her heart thrummed in her chest as she was yanked closer and closer to her executor, an ax and a war hammer in his talons.
wasn't this how hatchlings die? wings broken, and thrown off a mountain.

no- she couldn't die. she was so young, so very young- she did nothing wrong. she saved lives.

in a panic, she shouted, once again:

"spears! please- stop them- cut me free and hold them back!"

she never really knew the power and gravity words have.

sticks and stones can break my bones, but words never hurt me, y'know, that sort of stuff.

but flicker learned, as she saw the spears vibrate in the talons of the guards, and then shoot out of them like a peregrine.

she never expected for them to fly straight through the dragons.

all of them.

then fly through and snap her chains as if they were merely the same.

tears welled up in her bright yellow eyes.

she had to leave.

and so she did, into the distance and obscurity.
